Underground Street Soccer

After the initial code name of Ultimate Street Football, Gameloft eventually got out this game under the name of Underground Street Soccer(probably more marketable brand for the US). It’s the same game, actually, which follows the popular trend of being marketed by popular sportsmen; in this case, Samuel Eto’o. But this game is more than that, obviously. Otherwise I wouldn’t have spent so many hours playing it. It’s what in my modesty I’d call a good game.

So what’s it all about? It’s about soccer/european football, obviously; underground, as in smaller teams (really now, 11-player teams in the real game is a bit too much to handle, so the game’s approach of 4-player teams is a refreshing take) and great (sub)urban landscapes. The perfect way to feel the adrenaline flowing, right? :)

Main strong point: the graphics. When I say Gameloft the good graphics are self-understood, as this game confirms again. Just check out the cool captures (borrowed from the official website).

Diversity comes next as a trait of a good game - both the players and the teams are fully customizable: you may choose any outfit and any player you like for your team.

Another key point familiar to you soccer games out there - but nicely implemented in this mobile game is the ability to improve different team stats using experience points - it might seem just a detail at first, but it’s what made me play a few good seasons to get the team to a full hundred percent.

The other thing that got  me hooked on the game is… the power bar, the key to all the cool tricks in the game. Familiar to you from the combat games, this is the doorway to marvelous possibilities.

Let me go a bit into some detail: whenever you attack and hold the ball you get to fill a power bar. Once filled, this power bar onlocks the opportunity to perform special attacks/dribbles which, if well executed, will almost certainly lead to a goal. Not difficult, as you only have to press the right keys at the right time, but it gives you a good feeling when you get to score. For instance, you can use this to save a hopeless match or just to humiliate your adversary, so it adds a feeling of strategy to the game. One other thing - really good in my opinion, but bad when it applies to you - is that you have the possibility to repel the opponent’s special attack and start one of your own, literally turning the sides.

It’s not all of it, mind you - you’ll find a little extras in the game; but the bottom line is that I recommend it. This game gets close to a 9 out of 10 and even close to 10 if you’re a soccer fan.
