Astro Pop, great mobile fun

Jokes aside now, I didn’t know about this game either, until I stumbled upon its mobile version. After playing with it a bit(and felling in-love with the simple yet exciting gameplay), I made a small Google query and.. voilĂ ..! To my not-so-big surprise, I learned that the game has always been a major hit, be it as an online flash version, PC game or console one.

Astro Pop Mobile is the mobile version of the uber-famous PopCap Games title. You know PopCap Games: they are the producers of some of the most-played games online(no, not WoW); they do simple yet extremely addictive and exciting titles, with great cute graphics and a very small learning curve; basically, the kind of family computer puzzles or arcade games with point-and-click or left-right basic commands; my favorite kind of games. You are bound to have heard of at least their major titles: Zuma, Bejeweled or Alchemy, for instance :D astropop screenshot

While the PC/Flash version boasts more colorful graphics and extra-spicy sound effects, the mobile version keeps the charm alive and, after all, allows you to play it on the go. Delivered by GluMobile, it has a pretty good implementation, although on my Sony-Ericsson v630i there are some minor quirks(the control is not smooth enough - in order to move, I have to keep pressing the direction keys - instead of holding them pressed); still I managed to play it for several hours without blinking, so I dare call it addictive and fun.

astropop screenshotThe concept? If you’ve never played the online, the PC or the XBOX version, let me introduce to you at least the mobile version: the game is somewhere at a cross of Tetris with Space Invaders and Puzzle Bubble/Bubble Bash: colored rows of blocks are coming down from the top, and your aim is to make them disappear: you grab(attract) one or more bricks from the upper rows, move and shoot them back at the colored bricks; the groups of at least four same-colored adjacent bricks disappear and bring you points.

Sounds too easy? The special/bonus items make the fun of the game: among the many, you have exploding bricks, poisonous bricks(they can’t be grabbed and the only way to make them disappear is to destroy neighboring blocks) - plus, they contaminate nearby block, so they spread over time… and many more; plus, my favorite - the Supa mode (once it charges, you get to shoot laser beams). There are plenty of cool surprises in the game, I won’t spoil the surprise.

All in all, it’s a beautiful game: colorful, exciting, easy-to-learn yet hard-to-master. Enjoy playing it!
