Lumines - Mobile

Lumines MobileOh, yes. Yet another block falling puzzle. With several different colors. And you have to match at least four of them. Been there, done that.

Err, not exactly. To say that this game is just another Tetris-clone/look-alike wouldn’t make it justice. Not even a tiny bit. Because this game is Superbe.
What’s new? Lumines is a different and innovative block puzzle game, that takes the Tetris concept miles further, in a new and interesting way. I say interesting because even if using the Tetris concept, this game mixes the ingredients into a great, original idea. It has first appeared on Sony PSP, produced by Ubisoft (there is a cool demo website out there introducing you to the concept). But it’s not the PSP version we’re talking about, but the recent mobile Java game, which is extremely successful and addictive as well(see the official website over here).
The goal is to form solid-colored rectangles of at least two-by-two blocks by rotating and arranging the falling squares properly. As the Gamespot guys call it,

Solid rectangles instantly light up and get cleared away as a line (called the “timeline”) intermittently passes from left to right across the screen, kind of like a windshield wiper and just like a timeline in a music sequencer program.

First I could say that the gameplay is very alert, pretty close to an arcade, you’ll finish some levels on the edge, there are boss-levels at the end of every stage and the difficulty becomes more challenging as you progress through the game.Lumines Mobile

In the usual Gameloft tradition, the game offers lots of stages, avatars, game modes and skins - that’s how they call the background of a stage - many of them are not available at first but as you progress through the game they will get available.

The interesting modes (besides playing any skin you like, normally, randomly, against time, vs CPU) would be the puzzle mode - where the purpose is not to score points, but to fill certain given shapes in order to progress(and, trust me, that’s hard, since the blocks tend to fall down the given shape :D ).

But I’ve saved the juicy part for the end. The game has not only good graphics, but GREAT sound to match it. As you enter the game, the music (a superbe electronica soundtrack) starts hypnotizing you. Yep, the music adds a great deal to the game experience, it’s so good it’s addictive.

Hmm.. I don’t know what else to tell you in order to make you love this game. Trust me, it’s a great game for anyone who ever enjoyed Tetris. And if you never enjoyed a little falling-block-puzzle fun, then maybe it’s about time to start. And if you don’t believe me, just go peek onto other reviews websites out there.
