Opera Mini on Mobile
The curious and the early adopters already know about it. The rest of you, please keep reading:
There is a cool mobile browser in town, and it definitely rocks. First of all, because it’s absolutely free. Secondly, because it rocks. Ok, I’m repeating myself here, but that’s only because I’m so excited:
For the first time, I downloaded and installed on my Sony Ericsson v630i mobile phone the Opera Mini mobile browser. All this time I’ve been using the phone’s browser, which I thought was pretty decent (and indeed it is). But Opera Mini is much better and it’ll become my mobile browser of choice.
What does it have so special?
- first of all, it’s free. That’s always a plus.
- secondly, it’s great looking. Web pages are rendered in their full colors, css-styled and all, the page layout and overall display looks great, everything is optimized to look nice on your cell phone.

- thirdly, there are some neat settings you can tweak: for instance, you can load images at a lower image quality (I don’t know how they do it..), optimized for the phone version. Or, if you chose, you can download the full quality image, at the cost of extra cents on your mobile data plan. There is also a smooth scrolling, several text sizes (that look great, btw), and a “jump to text” checkbox to ease a bit all that scrolling. If not convinced yet, then I must also add the menu option “Page Information” that gives you details on the page size, partition (I suppose that if a page is too big it’ll get split in several subpages automatically). Plus, an easy-to-use bookmark system, plus the usual navigation/history menus.
- The cherry on top? The homepage. It looks great and contains a cool menu for the most useful things you’d want to browse to. All designed to minimize your navigation efforts. Now that’s what I want in a mobile web browser!
- an address box for typing the url you want to go to
- a search box for google search
- a search box for wikipedia search
- the Bookmarks.
- the History link.
Opera Mini on Mobile is a sleek, great looking, extremely powerful FREE mobile software. I have no idea where the Opera guys take their money from, but I take off my hat in front of their skills. I’m probably never going to use my phone’s default web browser again. For more information on Opera Mini, just go to it’s homepage . You’ll be able to download it in a couple of seconds. Or you can just use their online simulator to test it’s look and feel(warning: the simulator didn’t work on my computer, I must be missing a plugin or something).

[...] I’ve already introduced you to Opera Mini 2, which is great as it is already. But Opera Mini 3 is even better, trying to be a One-Size-Fits all mobile program. Therefore it includes most of the things you’d ever wish for: a great and improved Mobile Web Browser, a mobile RSS news reader, and a photo-blogging (mo-blogging) feature (unfortunately restrained to posting only to myopera blogs).
