Google’s Gmail Mobile

There are not many free useful softwares for mobile. Actually there are some, but most are targeted towards Windows Mobile smartphones or Symbian OS, not for the rest of us owners of standard MIDP 2.0 phones.
Google Mobile app
That’s why I was extremely pleased to see that, finally, a cool toy came out of the hands of the Google Crew: you might have heard about it already, but this doesn’t prevent me from blogging about:

Gmail Mobile is a fancy looking email reader for, you guessed, mobile phones. It’s sleek looking, colorful and has a look and feel very similar to that of ajaxed Gmail. When you start it, it connects to the internet and downloads the latest emails from your inbox. You can read them, reply, compose, etc.

So.. why would you use such a gizmo instead of simply browsing from your mobile browser to Gmail’s mobile version? First of all, there is no url typing involved. Just start the program and it automatically does the connexion, retrieval, etc. Secondly, it looks nicer and seems to be more powerful than the wap version. Thirdly, it seems to optimize the traffic, which is always great in case you have a limited mobile data plan.

More info about this simple yet beautiful mobile app over here or here . Download it by typing http://gmail.com/app in your mobile phone’s browser.

Thanks, I’ve been looking for the gmail jar download url and finally found you on Google.

If you really want to install Google’s Gmail Mobile on some other j2me platforms, you might need access directly to the original .jar file.

So, without further ado, Google’s Gmail jar can be downloaded directly from the link http://www.gmail.com/app/v1.0.0/en/gmail-g.jar

(link found on various other websites, thanks to Google :D)

[...] Definitely the kind of innovative app that brings bad news to other mobile competitors. There’s email integration (battling with Gmail Mobile that we featured earlier), yahoo maps - going head-to-head with Google mobile maps or even Mobile GMaps, and off course there’s the cool Flickr integration(that makes it extremely easy to upload photos and browse your Flickr library) which kicks the some already established competitors such as Shozu right in the ankles. This new gmail for Mobile is GREAT! BUT…BUT..
Why does one have to download it everytime one wants to check mail? It tells you that it already exists but still whether you want to download it, and so forth..
Is there a a way out of this lengthy procedure…?

That’s plain silly, Jean-Marie: I don’t know what happened on your phone, but there shouldn’t be ANY reason why it wantd you to download the program again.

Here’s the thing:
once you went to http://gmail.com/app, downloaded and installed the program on your phone, you should be able to find the program again, somewhere within your phone’s Applications menu. You don’t need to go EVER AGAIN at the address specified. Instead, you just start the program directly from the phone. It will ask you if you want to access the internet to access your email, and that’s about it.

So no, as far as I can tell you should download the gmail mobile program only ONCE. Yet again, perhaps your mobile phone is weird and doesn’t let you install things on it, but I highly doubt it. Go check and try to find the GMAIL program somewhere in your phone’s menus. It should be there!

Exelente aplicacion, a mi me funciona a la perfeccion. Vamos google siempre un paso adelante.

gmail works like a charm on my motorola KRZR K1 :) i didn’t think it would but it’s pretty sweet! thanks for the link.

I find it interesting, if not incredibly ironic that the interactive team that started GOOGLE has become so s_______ing commercial that all it can display on its site is self serving falteraaaa…….. Google, shame on you……I had enough faith in you to apply for one of your email addresses so I could express my freedom of spirit, seflf-expression, and all the uninalienable rights afforded my in the U.S. Constitution,,,,,,,,and yet you, meaning GOOGLE (not to be confused with the dedicated employees who make your company happen)responding to the customer expressed needs, but, according to my interpretation, are responding to the media hype and degrading the intent to provide a service that warrants the title of being the greatest search engine of all. Please remember that there were many generations before you who had the wisdom of the ages.

I wish whomever reads this the best. I also kindly request that you send my comment to a person within the GOOGLE organizationt that has enough customer service and, frankly the moxy, to call me for a personal interview and critique of GOOGLE.

For the purpose of knowing more about me as we prepare to spare about my contentions versus GOOGLE’s International Business Plan, please allow me to introduce my self. My name is Janet Gallagher, a 59-year old native born Oregoinian with a history of at least 5 generations of homesteading in Oregon and may I also mention that I have 37 years of top managment experience, not the least of which was the last 12 years of international business experience with developing countries (premariley
India but also including the Baltic Countries, South America, and the Mexican States

I look forward to whomever has the intestinal fortitude (GUTS in U.S. Verecular to return my call.

Respectfully, but disappointed,
